A Comprehensive Approach
We invite you to experience the difference a comprehensive and collaborative approach can make! We offer both chiropractic and physical therapy treatments in our office and while these are two different practices, our doctors will work collaboratively with each other, and the patient to provide a total body wellness plan.
Chiropractic vs. Physical Therapy
So what's the difference between chiropractic and physical therapy? In short, a chiropractor focuses primarily on the alignment of bones and joints, plus disorders and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. A physical therapist is a movement specialist and evaluates how the body functions in movement.
It’s often thought that chiropractors only treat the spine. But in fact, they can evaluate, diagnose and treat disorders and injuries of the entire musculoskeletal and nervous systems. These include the joints, tendons, muscles and nerves. Chiropractors can also provide preventive care for pregnant women, treat sports injuries and even relieve headaches that arise from dysfunction of the neck or nervous system.
In contrast, physical therapists treat injuries and conditions of the whole body as they relate to the body’s function, strength and mobility. They focus on restoring the patient to optimal functioning through a physical rehabilitation program. For example, a patient might visit a physical therapist for help relearning how to walk after a stroke, moving with a prosthetic limb or strengthening a body part after a surgery or injury.
While there are some differences between physical therapy and chiropractic, there are some very common denominators. In fact, when used in conjunction, the two practices can actually improve the effectiveness of both treatments. So what are the similarities between a chiropractor and a physical therapist?
- Must pass rigorous licensing exams
- Are highly trained at the doctorate level
- Focus on non-surgical and drug-free treatment
- Offer preventative wellness assistance
- Can work with peds, prenatal patients, and seniors
